This Oriental mirror is a Japanese American jewel from the late 19th Century. Early Western interest in Asian art was sparked by the trade increase following the Meiji restoration of 1868. The elaborate fret work surround and fully sculpted dragon mask corners evoke ancient bronzes originating in China around the 8th Century B.C. This stunning piece now hangs in Kingscote Cottage (1841), Newport, Rhode Island. The Newport Dragon is available in an ancient copper leaf, ancient gold leaf, or ancient oriental finish and is further embellished by a beveled mirror.
